Buddha's Utterance

न वाक्करणमत्तेन, वण्णपोक्खरताय वा।
साधुरूपो नरो होति,इस्सुकी मच्छरी सठो॥

Na vākkaraṇamattena, vaṇṇapokkharatāya vā;
Sādhurūpo naro hoti, issukī maccharī saṭho.


Not by eloquent speaking,
Nor by good looks one has;
One can be called as a good-hearted man,
if he’s still having jealousy, miserly and crafty.


即使是辯才,
或者相貌俊美;
人意若還保存著妒,嗇及奸,
不可算是“善人”。

Bukan dikarenakan pandai bicara
dan bukan pula karena memiliki penampilan yang baik;
seseorang dapat menganggap dirinya sebagai “orang lurus dan baik”,
apabila ia masih bersifat dengki, kikir dan penuh tipu muslihat.
